Hummingbird Feeders
Humming Bird Feeders
HummingBird Feeders are one of the best ways to attract these beautiful little birds to your garden, but you are going to want to make sure you have the correct feeder and food to encourage them to come visit.
Hummingbirds are attracted by lots of bright colors, especially the color red, so it stands to reason that this would be a good color for your humming bird feeders. If you already have one, then you could paint it (with a non-toxic paint), or add something bright red to it, like perhaps a red bow. It is probably best to avoid bright yellow though, as wasps and bees seem to find yellow attractive and you won’t want them around the humming bird feeders.
Most of the humming bird feedershave perches so that the birds can stand while they are busy feeding. It is also important that the holes within the feeder are just large enough for the humming birds themselves, but not so large that you are going to be plagued by larger birds, or squirrells who will want to steal the food.
Generally the hummingbird feeders will be made from either glass or acrylic, but can also be manufactured from wood or plastic. You do need to watch some of these though as they can become rough and cause injuries to the bird, so probably best to stick to the glass or acrylic.
The humming bird feeders can be found in all kinds of shapes and sizes and will normally have several different feeding areas contained within them.
Where is the best place for humming bird feeders?
Generally these are best situated near to bright flowers in your garden, as this type of location is much more likely to bring the humming birds to your garden. So that you can watch the birds you will want to have it so that you are able to see from your windows, but not so close to a busy area that the birds will be frightened to come too near.
If you are placing your humming bird feeders near to any glass then please make sure that you have stickers on the window otherwise they are quite likely to fly straight into the glass and badly injure or even kill themselves.
What Should I Put In My Humming Bird Feeder?
They love nectar and sugar water so this is a good thing to put in your feeder. Humming birds also like tiny insects like ants and spiders, although these are not so easy to put in a feeder! So to attract the humming birds make sure your feeder is full of sugar water and nectar and you should soon find humming birds visiting.
What About Cleaning the Hummingbird Feeder?
You will need to keep your humming bird feeders clean if you want to keep the birds coming to visit on a regular basis. The basin type feeders are really easy to clean. Also make sure to clear out any sugar water that has not been used as this can go off very quickly.
